6 Tips To Get You Through The Holi-Daze
"What day is it, March 46th?"
When the holidays peak, it's normal to feel physically and emotionally spent. Empty. Wiped. Although the reward of family time and a little PTO typically balances it out, the year that never ends is turning tradition on its head as families balance working and learning from home while keeping their circle smaller than ever.
This feeling of blah has been informally crowned the holidaze—and can leave you struggling to get out of bed, never mind the house. In a year best summarized as "strainful" the holiday blues could hit extra hard this year. The Good Banana Bunch (ok ok, our staff) is here to share some tips to stay fresh so you can enter the new year with a clear head.
6) MEDITATE (Seriously, it's great)
No, not medicate—ME-DI-TATE. If you're new to the wander-within, getting started can be intimidating. Do I need a noise machine? I haven't crossed my legs since kindergarten! I don't have 90 minutes! Skrrrrrt! Pump the brakes. Meditation is something you ease into, and there are plenty of ways to get started.
We're big fans of Calm—an app that helps you stay mentally fit, that fits in your pocket. They have a free trial, but if even that is too much of a commitment, offer tips and tricks via their social media outlets (such as the video below). You'll find yourself getting better sleep with a renewed sense of focus—the opposite of the tired body and mind you've been dragging to curbside pickup for the past 3 months.
5) PEACE YOURSELF TOGETHER
Puzzles are having somewhat of a renaissance. They've come a long ways since the 98-and-a-half piece donated to dentist's office lobby. And with extended time at home, there's never been a better time to pick one up. Puzzles force you (in a polite way) to focus while slowing down your pace, all the while jogging your memory. We suggest that you skip the reflecting lake and Scottish countryside landscapes and go for the belly laughs of a good Kwirkworks 1,000 piece puzzle—you don't have to give up a good time to stay sharp!
4) NOW WALK IT OUT
A quick walk can do wonders for your soul. It doesn't have to be long. It doesn't have to be a solo adventure. It doesn't even have to be at a fast pace (but outdoors is ideal), either. A daily walk gives you a few minutes to collect yourself while re-invigorating your energy levels. Plus, it's always helpful to get experience a change of scenery. Walks are free and by far the easiest new-habit to pick up. Start slow and build yourself up to a point where you feel like NOT going for a walk is going to cheapen the day.
3) LOG OFF
Its common for people to spend 4-plus hours on their phones per day, and so much of that time on social media. It leads to constant comparison of our lives, endless scrolling, poor sleep, and hours spent that we simply cannot get back. How bad is it? Do this:
- Look at your phone's screen time app (or even your it's battery usage analysis) and scale your daily use. 3 hours per day? Ok so that's 21 hours per week and over 45 DAYS of usage PER YEAR. What could you do with an extra FORTY-FIVE DAYS?
- Stay accountable: announce to your followers that you're doing a detox, and delete your social media apps. Logging off isn't enough—go ahead and delete them (don't worry, they'll be there when you come back).
- Enjoy the reclaimed time! Sleep later (or fall asleep faster), spend less money, lengthen your attention span—there are so many benefits! In fact, you should check out this video to see what a digital detox can do for you:

2) CATCH SOME Z's (AND H2O's)
Getting more sleep is obvious, right? Easier said than done. When are you supposed to secretly wrap presents, move elves into mischievous positions, and catch up on your #WFH duties? The temptation always goes like this: stay up later than normal, then soak yourself in coffee the next morning. Here's two hacks in one: wake up earlier instead of burning the midnight oil, and start your day with a guzzle of cold water...
Breaking the caffeine cycle will help you rest easier so you can...well, wake up earlier the next day. It may take a few tries, but stick to it—it works! You'll have far fewer distractions in the morning, when social media, news, and your household is much quieter. You'll get a head-start on your day, cross more off your list, have more time for sleep, actually sleep, and avoid the 11th hour rush to get everything done. Disaster averted!
